And now … an introduction, as promised, to next week’s guest blogger series!

I’ve rounded up some blogging friends of mine to share their areas of expertise with you. I left it open to them what to share that “You Can Do,” and I’m so happy with what they submitted.

Next Monday, Tiffany begins the series by encouraging us to embrace the hard task of choosing to follow a healthy lifestyle. Tuesday, Rachel will share how to create a rockin’ playlist. Wednesday and Thursday, Joy will follow up with some great advice for throwing a dinner party (that you can play your playlist at!). Finally, on Friday, Daniel will veer off into a more organizational topic and share how he conquered his paper tiger.

I hope you’ll stop by each day next week to get introduced to the featured bloggers and learn more about their topics!

See you then, and have a wonderful weekend in the meantime,

Home Tour Tuesday: The Master Bedroom

Ta-da! It’s Tuesday. Every Tuesday, I reveal a new area or room in our home. Since we’ve just moved in, for now I’m just experimenting with what I’d like to do to improve it or decorate it. Eventually, I’ll show off before and afters. (Can’t wait!) But for now, it’s just the “before” and an explanation of what I’d like to see happen in the near future.

Today’s tour is of one of my favorite rooms in the house. I love, love, love the paint color. Our bedroom has a high ceiling, gray-blue walls, and white accents. I’m working on adding artwork, prints, and pictures on the walls, but for now I’ve just been trying to get it organized. I think I’m almost there!

You can see in this picture that the left-hand bookshelf has a white box on it. I put it there so Daniel could have a place to hold all of the wires and electronic bits and pieces that accumulate on “his” bookshelf. It works pretty well! Someday soon I really need to get him a better nightstand solution, but for now the box and the bookshelf do their job.
For my part, my growing accessories collection has been haphazardly strewn across the top of my dresser for awhile, until I realized I could continue “shopping” in my home and reuse something for an organizational purpose. If you look on the left-hand corner of the dresser, you’ll see a white tray. Guess what? That tray is actually a serving tray from Bed, Bath, & Beyond that we got for our wedding. I’ve used it for parties, but usually it is stored above our refrigerator. Not now! Now it is the perfect place to store my bracelets and sunglasses. I’ve also put a white ramekin I rarely use on top of it, to hold loose rings that I don’t wear every day.
Here are few close-ups of the room. I spy my white owl!:
And finally, a couple of shots from inside the bookshelves. Yes, I know the gold-framed picture of us has showed up all around the house:
So that’s our master bedroom! In a couple of weeks I’ll delve into the master bathroom.

Moving on Up!

Now that the downstairs is (mostly) set up, I’ve moved on to the upstairs. The office renovation is nearing its last steps; it is time to tackle the chaos of the guest bedroom.

Now, if I was normal (ha!) this would be the place we put a bed and a nightstand and a trunk full of extra blankets and linens, and it would all be so pretty.

I’m not normal.

So while, yes, we have left room for a bed/air mattress for future guests, I’ve decided I need space to store all the vintage goodies for my Etsy shop, Creative Salvage. So onward and upward, movin’ on up … all of my stash is going to be moved to Spare ‘Oom, as C.S. Lewis would say.

The problem is, what will I put it all on to keep it safe? I thought about this for some time. With a near-zero budget (I’m boot-strapping my itty bitty bizĀ  for sure), I had to get creative. So, I stole some shelving from the garage and a tower of plastic drawers from our office (Daniel will never notice they’re gone. Shh. Don’t tell.) I also have an empty vintage metal cabinet I’ll snag. I’m kicking our luggage out of the closet. It will go … um … in the attic? Somewhere. And I’ll set up an inventory area and packing/shipping area. Hopefully, it will all fit.

I’m determined to have my business organized, both for our sanity and for better customer service.

And then I’m going shopping for more stock to fill the shelves and make my efforts worthwhile. Hey, it’s as good as an excuse as any.

Vacuum a Mattress

We vacuumed our bed today. I’ve read that a mattress gains weight over the years, just from dead skin cells we shed, along with mites and dust. That ‘s INSANE.

So we stopped the insanity. We vacuumed. Yep, we used the whole upright vacuum, beater bar and all. We just took our comforter and sheets off the bed, tossed the naked pillows aside, and plopped that sucker up on top of our king-sized pillow top, set it on “low carpet,” and had at it.

{Our mighty vacuum. Source: Bissell}

It was pretty disturbing to see it was actually picking up gunk. (We have one of those see-through no-bag vacuums and could watch the dust twirl around.) Granted, we had vacuumed the floor first. Maybe we should have done it in the other order, but you know what they say about hindsight being 20/20 and all.

No wonder our allergies have been acting up “somethin’ fierce” lately. We had cleaned out the filter and dumped the former contents of that clear catch-all for the dirt before starting fresh in our bedroom–where the dog isn’t allowed–and there, tumbling around inside, was discarded fur and dust like you wouldn’t believe. It filled it half full from just our room. The bed dust was the icing on the cake, so to speak.

Yikes.

Day 10: Baskets and Bins and Storage, Oh My!

Now that I have a nice neat closet, I’ve been thinking of ways to utilize my new-found storage space on the top shelves. Not just for this closet, but also for the others, including our laundry area. So I’ve been looking around …
